A & P

When this story was first written the roles for women were different then what they are today. In the story the girls are treated poorly because they were not dressed properly according to the store manager. I feel like if this was written by a women it would have been different. I feel like a female writer would have said something more about how women were treated bad and how nothing was done about it most of the time. In the story Sammy likes the way the girls look. He was not living around in the time were women would never be dressed like that and were they did what they were told. The store manager did live in that time were women were always dressed from head to toe. Also because the girls did talk back to manager was a big no no. Back in the day that would never happen. Back when the story was written there was a distinct difference between the roles of men and women.

  1. A feminist reader would likely question WHO was treating the girls poorly. Is the manager the only one mistreating them? What would a feminist reader do with the narrator? Is the running commentary by the narrator simply in keeping with his age and the usual "coming of age" being ruled by hormones?
